Marked as an Excellent Historical Building in Shanghai, the CSM is located on Number 15 of Huangpu Road, Hongkou District. The building used to be called Astor House Hotel, the first western-style hotel in China. Astor House Hotel was founded in 1846 and moved to the current site in 1858. The building completed between the 1890s to the 1920s witnessed many firsts in the history of Modern China. Astor House Hotel was renamed as "Pujiang Hotel" in 1959. On December 19, 1990, Shanghai Stock Exchange opened for business in here. As the birthplace of China's securities market, this building has witnessed China's opening-up and the growth of securities market. Therefore, it is of great historical importance and cultural value.

Scope and Goals

The scope and goals of CSM are multi-dimensional. Content-wise, it includes stocks, futures, bonds, funds, options etc, as well as banking and insurance. Time-wise, it focuses on China's capital market since reform and opening-up, while tracing back to ancient and contemporary China when stocks and bonds were first germinated. Space-wise, it demonstrates China's securities and fund market developments and touches upon financial culture and securities history worldwide. As a national securities museum, CSM strives to build itself into a securities and futures exhibits collection and demonstration center, an international exchange center for securities and futures culture, as well as an education center for securities and futures investors. It also endeavors to recapture the history of China's capital market and play its due role in cultivating financial culture with Chinese characteristics and promoting high-quality development.
